Handle won't lift, door won't lock — the uPVC people.
uPVC and multipoint door lock repair, across Bedfordshire
The handle won't lift, the key spins, or the door only locks if you lean on it. That's alignment, a worn gearbox, or a failed cylinder — and it's the work we do most. Repair from £86 plus parts, with the likely price agreed before we drive.
- The multipoint mechanism identified by model before we quote
- Repair rather than full replacement where the strip is sound
- A free, no-obligation quote — best case and worst case, agreed first
What we get called out for
- Handle lifts with the door open but jams when it's shut — the door has dropped
- Handle has gone loose, floppy or gritty, or won't lift at all
- Key turns a full circle and nothing locks — the gearbox tailpiece has sheared
- You have to lift the handle hard every time, and it's getting worse
- Composite or patio door with the same multipoint fault
- uPVC window lock or espagnolette that won't lock or has seized
- Door locked shut and jammed with the mechanism failed
What's included
- Diagnosis with the door open and shut to separate alignment from a gearbox fault
- Hinge, keep and strike-plate adjustment to bring a dropped door back into line
- Gearbox-only replacement where the connecting strip and hooks are still good
- Full multipoint strip replacement where the mechanism is obsolete or worn through
- The door checked so the handle lifts cleanly and every point engages before we leave

Questions we get asked
- Can you repair just the gearbox, or do I need a whole new mechanism?
- Often just the gearbox. If the connecting strip, hooks and rollers are still sound, the centre case comes out on its own and a matching one goes back in. A full strip is only needed when the mechanism is worn through or the model is obsolete. We identify the exact unit before quoting either way.
- Why won't my uPVC door handle lift up?
- Usually the door has dropped a few millimetres and the hooks are catching on the keeps in the frame. If the handle lifts fine with the door open and jams when it's shut, it's alignment and often a same-visit fix. If it's stiff or dead even with the door open, the gearbox is the suspect.
- How much does a uPVC door lock repair cost?
- Labour is £86 plus parts. A realignment runs £111–£234. A replacement gearbox is the labour plus the part, and the part is the variable — commonly under £100, more for obsolete units. You'll get a best case and worst case before any work starts.
- My door won't lock at all and it's night — can you secure it?
- Yes. If the mechanism can't be repaired on the spot we'll get the door secured so it's not left open overnight, then come back with the part. A door that won't lock is treated as urgent.
- How long does a uPVC multipoint lock last?
- Ten to fifteen years is normal. It drops sharply if the door has been out of alignment for a long time, because every hard lift wears the gearbox. A door that's been getting stiffer for months is worth sorting before it fails.
- Do you cover composite and patio doors too?
- Yes. Composite doors use the same style of multipoint mechanism, and sliding patio doors have their own multipoint and rollers we repair as well.
